Many “S” cam manufacturers offer heat treated cam heads and splines, leaving the bearing journals with conventional surface resistance of the steel, exactly where cam bushings come in contact with the cam. Constant friction of the bushing on the journal causes wear of the components, forcing you to replace them.
Heat treated journals offer better resistance against wear from the bushings and last longer than non-treated journals.
Heat treated journals also help reduce cam twist.
